Sorry for late report, I just got back in town.

Fished out of Pirate's Cove on Sat. on the Lady C. Started slow on the the 600 line with nada, moved north to the 650 on which we found a strong weed line and about a two year-old pallet. Without overstating it, there were at least 500 dolphin under it - of every size from 2 lbs to 20. We bailed 23 before giving it up.

Moved north to the 750 line getting several strikes but nothing coming tight -more chicken dolphin I think, when at 1:00pm two strikes that were CLEARLY not dolphin.

One of them took a half of spool on a 50. We got the first rod to the boat and boated a nice 60 lb YFT. The other rod was being handled by the 16 year old daughter of the boat's owner, she was on her 1st offshore trip ever. This turned into a 30 min ordeal due in part to the inexperience of the angler, but obviously a good fish nonetheless. Finally, I gaffed it without incident (thank God) and me and my co-mate drug a huge yellow fin in the boat who promptly decided to tear-up the cockpit and dislocated a finger on my left hand in the process.
We weighted him at the dock- 78 pounds on an electronic scale.
A picture on him and the proud angler may appear on the cover of the Pirate's Cove newsletter next month.
I think you can get all of the dolphin down there you could ever want. One guy said it was was not possible to troll around the weed line because he had 6 on every 50 feet.

Nice Kent! Hope it's not a finger you need to use much. The Mahi have been unreel this year.
Tight lines.

Thanks guy's-the finger is sore but on the mend. Obviously will have no effect on fishing.
I'll tell you I have a renewed respect for you guys working the cockpit.
First time I've done that in a while --hard work - but more fun than running the boat. I was able to constantly offer unsolicited "suggestions" to the Capt. on everything he was doing wrong, while having no responsibility for the outcome.

It was fun acting like Randy, I see why he enjoys it so much.

Great job Kent! I fished out of OI on Sunday and we had a ball on a big weed line with butterfly jigs as soon as we dropped down the mahi would attack. We finished up with 2 wahoo 21 mahi and a load of sea bass hooked up with one tuna on the jig and he exploded my trevala rod into three peices. Shimano is replacing no charge got to luv it. Conch

Nice job Kent. Have far out is the 650 mark? In miles? I was out for the first time in my new boat on Sunday and heard a report that someone was catching nice dolphin 16 miles off the shore.

[/quote]We were about 30 miles from the mouth of the Inlet on the 650 line. It would certainly not surprise me if someone was catching closer in, however. The dolphin are about as thick as they have ever been down there and that is saying something.
You can certainly find your own pod to bail, but I think the most efficient shot is around a gaggle of those charter boats - they are absolutly expert at locating them.
They bail out a mess and then start looking around for a yellowfin bite. Tune-up on channel 80 on the radio, be quiet and listen. They were yakking about this bite, and we found them pretty easily.

Good Luck
