I was determined to do something this weekend. Saturday in the evening went out into the bay and turned right around and fished at the Gynns Island bridge. The other boats we talked to said it was rough out there in the bay and they got really beat up. We caught a few bluefish, lost more than we brought in, using minnows. Did get one undersize flounder. All in all we had a good time.

Well Just signed up this morning and have been looking around. And low and behold I found out where I am going to take the kids for are first fishing trip in the new boat.

I have not done much saltwater fishing from anything but a 14' john boat. So wish us luck.

And thanks for all the help.

When I was a kid a squall flipped a 55 foot head boat over, so they can get ugly. An overly confident skipper stayed out too long. The bay is over 300 miles long, lots of room to roll up a swell from the Northwest, and the lower bay is open to the Northeast. Most of the time it's 1 to 3 foot.

I've been working on the pilings that hold the bridge up since early april and I've seen 8-10 foot breakers with a 60+ knot NE blow. Also squalls come up very fast and in the last 2 weeks we've been stuck out there 5 times watching lightning hit the water all around us and 55 knot West winds. The bay can get really ugly quick but like already said its mostly 1 to 3. I don't want to scare anyone, in a boat you could get out of harms way pretty fast. We don't have that option we cant leave our barges out there so we have to push them into Little Creek Harbor and thats about a 45 min push through the nasty stuff. I wish I had a waterproof video camera, I've seen some incredible weather out there.

George, when you were a kid head boats were propelled by men in helmets with oars. They probably couldn't get in fast enough. biggrin.gif

KIDS MAKE GREAT FISHING PARTNERS! WHAT KIND OF MINNOWS DO YOU USE FOR BLUES, AND WHERE DO YOU GET THEM? I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY INFO AS I AM REALLY STARTING TO GET INTO THE BLUE FISHING THING.
THANKS.

Your right Charlie, the days of iron men and wooden ships. And very scared sheep. I want to say 12 people including the captain died on the Dixie Lee 3. They were fishing right off of Ocean View. Ugly day. But here I have hijacked this gentleman's thread. My most humble apologies. I'll be quiet now.

My place is just south west of Deltaville on Rt.3. we either catch our in the creeks or buy them at Queen ccreeks http://www.queenscreek.com/. they have minows and eels and some good local knowledge.

I also some times buy at the J&W on rt. 33 in Deltaville.

This might be a little north for you but I have yet to venture south much as my current boat (only till Sat. wee wee) is a 14' john with one man lashed to the oars.

The kids and I still love to go out and drift fish for crokers and an ocational bass or drum.

Hope this helps.

Oh and minow trapes with a smal peice of manhaden (sp?) works great for the minows.

If you use small shrimp on #12-14 hooks for small spot and the like you can get the shrimp off of most of the docks with a minow net. Last time out my son (7) got to where he can catch 10-20 per scope. We only need 20 or so for a days fishing as the kids are 7 and 9 so the day does not last long.

Good luck.

I went out again this week end. Tried to get to Wolf Trap Light from Gwynns Island. Right before we got to WTL my daughter got sea sick. The seas weren't to choppy, but it was more than a 5yo could stand,my 2 yo was fine. We drift fished back up to GI. caught a bunch of bluefish and one Weak. Just hooked the minnow on a fish finder rig. Had a couple on some floats. Those bluefish tear them up. I finally got one bugger and when I was taking the hook out he coughed up the front part up 3 other minnows. We then motored over to GI bridge and picked up a couple more. I have a 19 foot CC and when the kids start complaining about getting bounced around in the bay I head over to the bridge. Lots of traffic through there but no chop.

As for the minnows I just put tap in the creek behind my folks house. I think thier called bull minnows. Like it was said before they sell them at Queens Creek if you cant catch em.
