Me and my buddy have been out about 6 times this year for flounder, most of the time it was at night. Ive been told night fishing for flounder is not very productive. He has a 19ft bayliner type boat (not a fishing boat at all, but I say if it floats its a fishing boat) and either one of us have much, if any , experience with the elusive flat fish.
SKUNKED!!!! Everytime we have gone out, not one in the cooler.. What is the best method of putting flounder in the cooler, not looking for the huge doormatts, but I wont cry if i get one, but just looking to put some fish in the freezer.
We mainly try the 1st island rocks and pillons. Whats the best bait, technique, and rig to get these sneaky bastards. And will a regular chart book show all wreck locations ??
I love reading all the reports on this site, I love this site, and would like to work my way up to the doormats, but keeping my goals in reach. Gota crawl befor you walk.

Thanks for any help..And keep up the good work guys

Try a live spot or croaker over the rocks between the 1st and second island. When you said you tried the rocks I would like to clarify for you. I hope you did not mean the rocks you can see above the water line around the island. The best place is the rocks that cover the tube between the 1st and 2nd island. The tunnel between the islands is covered with rocks to protect it. There is a sandy bottom adjacent to the rocks on both sides. You may get snagged a lot but this is a great place to catch a good sized flounder. Hope that helps.

Thank you very much bro, never realy tried the tube side of the island.
The problem with the spot is I cant catch any. Im a better fisherman in my ego than in reality.
Thanks again bro.

Flounder stay somewhat together. If your not catching any move to another spot. I would be somewhat between the islands not in the middle but like 1/4 of the way between on either side. IF nothing there try the edges of the shipping channel where it drops off. Try the small boat channel near the pilings of the bridge. Try the jetties around Little creek, try the channel entrance to the lynhaven. Keep moving eventually you will find them. But if your not getting anything after 30 min and the current is moving then try another spot.

Flounder feed primarily by sight, so by fishing at night you are handicapping yourself. They also feed, to a lesser degree, by smell and sense vibration, so they will bite at night, just not as well. Try drifting from deep water up into shallow water letting your bait bounce along the bottom. Good baits include, as was previously mentioned live spot and croaker, also fresh croaker or bluefish strips (the longer the better) and the old squid strip and minnow combination. Good luck.

Have to agree with George on this one, the only flounder I've ever caught at night involved a gig going into their heads......

I personally prefer large peices of cut bait, croaker or bluefish....I've had better luck with this rather than live spot.....but I suppose it depends a lot on where you fish. One thing I will mention, if you can get a drift between 1.5 - 2 knots, you're in the groove....anything slower or faster seems to slow the fishing down for me quite a bit.

Lynnhaven Boat ramp. This ramp is right by the Lesner Bridge/Lynnhaven inlet and is run by the City of VA Bch. Cost is $6 to launch with a 2007 Boat Fishing license ($12 ? without). Nice ramp. Arrive early on weekends as it fills fast. To get there make a right at the light just before the bridge when heading east on Shore Dr. I believe there is a sign with an arrow.

Bubba's Marina also has a ramp on the other side of the bridge. Not sure how much to launch but I think it is more then the City ramp.
