Plan on leaving Richmond in the AM, boat in tow, and want to go to York Spit. Any idea on best possible launch areas? boat is 17ft.

I also am heading down from Richmond tomorrow. I am putting in at Messick Point in Poquoson. It is good from Richmond because you don't hit a ton of traffic. It is a little south of York Spit. I'm going to try Bluefish Rock for cobia.

Tidemill is the closest to york spit it just a straight shot right out from there once you put in.

I'd recommend Owen's Marina on Brown's Neck Rd in Poquoson. New ramp, gas/diesel, good food, cold beer, and pretty girls.

It's quicker using Back Creek State Park coming from Richmond..... here's how;

I64 East bound to Exit 250B which is Rt 105 (Ft Eustis Blvd) and head east toward Yorktown. TURN RIGHT on Rt 17 and go to intersection of Rt 17 and Goodwin Neck Road (Pop's Restaurant on corner and Wachovia Bank is on the right at the intersection) and about 1/4 mile down on right is Grafton Fishing Supply with chum, eels, squid, tackle, etc). TURN LEFT at light onto Goodwin Neck Road to go to ramp.

Map of intersection;
Rt 17 & Goodwin Neck Road

Note: At this intersection Denbigh Blvd is on the right side of the intersection and Goodwin Neck Road is on the left side.

Head east on Goodwin Neck Road and when you get near the refinery on your left, look for an entrance into Back Creek State Park (you'll be making a right into the park) which has a nice launch ramp that is four wide. When you come out of the creek by the scallop trawlers, head off to your right. This is where you'll come out if using Tide Mill or Owen's Marina (mentioned above), but driving it's about 10 miles closer.

Pop's has great food (take only cash) and Grafton Fishing supply has a nice selection of equipment. Red Barn has good gas prices........... what more could you ask for???? I know, there's a WaWa on past Grafton Fishing Supply. hard_smiley.gif

Oh yeah, when you come out into the bay York Spit is several miles right out in front of you.......... and that's what makes it so great a place to launch. cool_smiley.gif

Y'all be careful to keep the markers on the proper side of the boat when coming out of the Poquoson River side of Back Creek - There's some sharp turns required. When going out to the York River (left side) keep the markers on the WRONG side of the boat. Don't ask why, they've always been that way. And stay in the channel all the way out ot the river! Lots of folks spend their time there waiting for high tide. sad.gif
