Hatteras the YellowFin are going Off,but they are also getting some BlackFin and small Bluefin. They are going about 19 miles out maybe a little closer but not on the beach. The weather can be harsh and unpredictable down there this time of year dont push your boat to its limits down there.Im sure someone would be glad to have you ride along there are alot of great fisherman on this site.

Got into the yellowfins thick last weekend 25 miles east of Hatteras Inlet. No real size, our biggest fish barely made 30 lbs. And he was the exception. And we took a serious beating. If you have a Hatteras chart, we headed east out of the inlet, toward what we call the 280 rocks. On your Loran chart, these rocks are on your 280 line (40280) east of Diamond Shoals. There are two groups of rocks on the 280 line, one just outside the 100 fathom curve and one just inside of the 100 fathom curve. Oddly enough, we call these the inner and outer 280 rocks. Anyway, there was a big temperature break right at the 100 fathom curve, green to brilliant blue, right between the two groups of rocks. We were dragging witches and small Ilanders with Ballyhoo and they ate just about everything equally. A smart captain may save himself some time and trouble by trying some Tuna Clones or feathers with no meat. No re-rigging and I think they'll eat 'em up. Warm water hitting the 100 fathom curve near bottom structure. That's the key. Where ever that is this week, that's where you need to fish. Or you could just take the easy route and follow the big boys out. Just give them lots of room. Tight lines and good luck.

Anybody got an April date in mind? I am pretty much restricted to the weekends. Barring poor weather (we'll have to make the call on the Wednesday before), getting a date planned is the first step. I am psyched, because I've been thirsty for some tuna action ever since September. I deploy for six months in May, and I didn't think I'd get another shot at 'em before I left. I am in boys! My boat is CONFIDENCE - 22' Grady that I pick my days with, but she is proven on the tuna!

I am ready to go!
I have a 23' Sea fox, I also have to pick my days.
I'll even leave my boat at the house if any one has room in their boat, and we can use my truck to pull it if needed.
I just want to go fishing!!!
Just waiting for a date. The hard thing for me is getting able bodys to commit to a specific date for a trip. When you are a couple of weeks out you have everyone and there brother wanting to go and when time come they backout!

I really don't know. All the fishing I've done over top of them and it never occurred to me they were anything other than rocks. They're labelled "Rocks" on my chart, including "The Rockpile" which the blue ones are known to frequent. But they can't be real rocks or they would have sunk into the sand and sediment a long time ago. So they probably are coral heads of some sort. But my NITROX certification doesn't extend to 100 fathoms, so I am unlikely to find out myself. Excellent question though. Maybe someone else can elaborate on it. Next time down to the Village I'll ask Spurgeon on Miss Hatteras. He does that grouper thing down there every spring.

I'd love to be able to tag along on someones boat and split the expenses to try for some tuna. Went out for out of ocean city one time a couple of years ago. Cold front came through the day before and screwed everything up. We were dragging through huge schools of feeding tuna but wouldn't take the artificials. Came back with a bad smell of skunk. No bail outs here as long as its a Sat. or Sun. Name the date and time and I'LL BE THERE.

Next time that happens pull a 3 1/2 inch Drone spoon without any weight.Put it through your high rigger release clip, troll by the Tunas and jerk the spoon out of the water a few times let the spoon simulate a Flying fish.Flying fish drive Yellowfin nuts!

A few years back I was out of OI it was real calm and the tuna wouldnt hit anything we trolled. But they keep coming to surface feeding. So we broke out some heavy spinning tackle and when they surfaced again and we were able to get close enough we thru rebel surface poppers at them and they devoured it.
It got pretty exciteing watching tuna come clean out of the water attacking those plugs.
(If you have used these poppers before you know the middle treble hook likes to snag the line. We put a small rubber band on it to hold the hook against the body and it worked great.)

Mega bite, the problem was we were on a charter. They never tried a different technique. My dad spent $600 for my dad, grandfather, brother, and myself to go out all day and came back with nada. Like I said, really want to get into some fish tuna or stripers. Have a boat in Hollywood MD and has been asleep since Dec. Gladly take someone out on the bay in the spring or summer in return.

I was told this technique by Anthony at 17 th street. A few years ago when I had been on a trip in Hatteras, where they were coming out of the water after the Flying fish but they wouldnt hit anything . We trolled everything we had by them but they snubbed our best..I have used stainless color and Blue because that is what color the Flying Fish are. This year we have a Kite rigged to pull a YumYum Flying fish Daisy Chain. If that doesent work I will stop and Chunk or cast for them.

One other suggestion if the tunas won't bite. Go to smaller hooks on the lightest leader you can. Most of my tuna rigs I tie on 60 lb flurocarbon with 7/0 hooks and I've heard of others going to 5/0 on 30 lb leaders to get a bite. That's a far cry from the 130 to 150 lb leaders and 12/0 hooks we used to use on everything.
No bite? Go light. Line's tight. All right. Good night.
