Left Rudee inlet at 5:30 with a rookie crew and an experienced friend at the wheel. Found the first weedline just past the HoptDog and put out the Mahi spread (not far back) of small blue/white and pink/blue Islanders. Caught a nice citation Bull on a pink/blue and caught 2 more nice gaffers, (one on each color) but blue/pink was the top hitter if we count knock-downs and bite-offs (8 bite offs in an hour).
Had some lousy hoo's that I bought at Outdoor World in Hampton Roads at 8pm the night before (stay away) due to mis-communication and poor planning. Decided to try some small cedar plugs which worked great for 4-5 smaller dolphin. My rookie crew had never bailed before so we backed into a fat part of the weedline that was holding the biggest bailers I've seen for the past 2 years. These were 5-7lb fish that put a good bend in the 20lb spinning outfits, even had a few take some line off the reel !
We caught our limit of bailers and headed east looking for a tuna or wahoo on the Cigar. Trolled there for 2 hours with no luck....sounds like we should have run another 5 miles to another weedline ? Nobody else was out there to talk to though, so we missed that one. With a box full of lil' mahi and 3 nice gaffers we ran home and had a good day.
If you're local and able to get out to that weedline this week before it breaks up it should be on the hotdog by now as it was moving west according to the charter captains on my dock @ Rudee's.....and the eastern swell we encountered. Even if the line is gone the big pads should be there as they were huge. Lil' cedar plugs and the colors above should do it for you and you'll save some fuel. If you need some mahi meat ......it's there.
